Is this a good city for single people? For couples? For families? Why or why not?

The city is good for families with smaller kids and couples. Singles seem to have a tougher time but usually integrate themselves into the expat NGO scene or the music scene. Parents with kids in high school may need to put them in boarding school. - Sep 2015

Depends on how outgoing you are, as most places. I would say it's hardest on single women, as it is not easy to do anything on your own here. However, the local Indians I have met through work are great and the hotel people cultivate relationships which have opened up avenues to socialize beyond our small community and meet very cool people. This post would be extremely difficult for singles. Calcuttans are extremely friendly, but also very curious by nature, and it would be impossible to try to date here without a peanut gallery of observers hovering over you. The expat population is very small, so that's another factor. Calcutta can be a good post for families, as nannies are very affordable. It would be a better place for younger kids than older kids - older kids would be bored here. - May 2008
