For the UK, consider reading Notes from a Small Island
For European travel, I recommend Time Out travel guides for cities and Lonely Planet travel guides for rural areas. There are cheap older versions of travel guides at local charity shops (like Oxfam's). For one look at culture, check out Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island. - Sep 2012
