Praia - Post Report Question and Answers
Are there any particular mental health issues that tend to crop up at post, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter blues)?
Isolation: you should be sure you can entertain yourself and your family without resorting to outside activities. There is not a lot of infrastructure for leisure activities, beside fitness and soccer. Most of the music scene is Cabo Verde music and not a lot of variety in style. - Dec 2024
Not really, though some people have problems with the isolation. It's good to get off the islands every couple of months. - Feb 2024
Cabo Verde's government is extremely worried about alcoholism; there is higher alcohol consumption than in neighboring countries. It's sunny most days, although isolation can be an issue...certainly during COVID. - Aug 2023
It is very isolated post. - Jan 2023
People who stick to Praia tend to get island fever pretty quickly. It's also a very, very small post, which can be challenging. People who get out and enjoy the people, the music, the ocean, and nature tend to thrive here. Traveling to the other islands, or even a daytrip out of Praia, tends to be enough to dampen island fever. The only way to catch the winter blues here is to lock yourself in a dark room, which might also be a sign of other mental health issues. The sun shines almost everyday of the year. - Dec 2017
