The Hague - Post Report Question and Answers

Is this a good city for single people? For couples? For families? Why or why not?

For families: 1000% yes. Kids get to be kids here; play sports, ride your bike, hit the beach, hang out with friends. The Dutch have magically preserved this magical piece of childhood. I'll note it's a little different for older kids; parents will need to remain involved because there are definitely temptations here. For Embassy singles and couples without kids, it's not quite as easy. The work is really hard here; more challenging than anyone expects. With that in mind, singles and couple without kids, don't have the outlet of knowing their families love it here. They just have the grind of the work, which wears people down over time. - Mar 2025

Yes for all, but you'll definitely hear some mixed opinions. I think the country has a lot to offer all these groups, but if you're used to a thriving metropolis and endless activity you'll be disappointed. Similarly, if you're used to very tight communities that come with some posts, you may not find that here either. - May 2022

Yes, yes, yes. There is much to enjoy in the Netherlands; many places to go, play, eat, drink, socialize. - Feb 2021

Excellent for everyone. - Feb 2015

I can only speak for families; yes, this is a great environment for a family. Low-crime and high-quality bicycle and public transportation allows kids, tweens, and teens a lot of freedom to travel safely on their own. - Jun 2014

Yes and no. It is a nice city but can be a bit boring for singles. For families it can be nice but the weather is so consistently bad that it puts a damper on family outings. - Apr 2014

Great for everyone! - Jul 2011

I would say yes with a little hesitation - Singles and couples most defintely. Families yes but if your have 3-4 children or more the cost of living will kill you. For example to travel from The Hague to Frankfurt or Paris which is a 4 hr train ride it is roughly USD 400 per person RT so if you have a family of 5 that equates to USD 2k just to travel to destinations 4 hrs away. Hotels are another USD 200 per night so a family of 5 or more can easily spend USD 3-4k on a 4-5 day excursion. Travel via car is almsot as expensive with gas costing USD 7-8 per gallon. - Nov 2010

Yes - for everyone! There is always something to do. - Jul 2010
