What kind of car do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car do you advise not to bring?
Listen to me. Do not bring a car here. I repeat, do not ship a car here. You can order a car from japaneseautos.com for a very reasonable price and it will be here when you arrive. If you bring a car, it will rust, and it will break down, and it will be worthless when your tour is over. The elements here destroy vehicles. Even if your car does make it, you will not be able to sell it for anything when you leave. The Japanese import used cars and they are incredibly cheap. You can buy anything you want. If you want to go into the jungle, then you will need an SUV. There are no carjackings. - Jul 2021
This is the most important thing I can share: DO NOT BRING A CAR HERE. Order a car from japanesevehicles.com. Japan dumps all of its used cars here and they are cheap. If you bring a car here it will get destroyed by the climate. You won't be able to sell it for what it is worth because of the glut of cars coming in from Japan. If you park your car under a coconut tree and a coconut falls and breaks your windshield, the car is considered totaled. If you order a car from one of the Japanese import sites the car will be here when you arrive, it will be cheap, and you won't be upset if something happens to it. I cannot stress this enough. You will regret bringing a car here. If you must bring a car then you can bring anything, as there are no rules here. But don't. - Apr 2021
SUV is handy, especially when it rains. Don't bring anything you value highly. Your car will get dinged, or bottom out on bad roads, or rust away with the constant rain. - Mar 2020
Bring something that you don't mind pushing off a cliff when you leave. Your car will get ruined here. 4-wheel drive and good clearance would be beneficial if you plan on exploring much. - Feb 2013
I'd recommend a small SUV. Gas is now US$5.07/gallon. You won't drive much here (the drive around the island takes just under 2 hours), but the roads are in bad condition. A sedan with low clearance will take a beating here. - Apr 2008
