What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

If you are here with a diplomatic mission, spouses cannot work on the local economy. There are a lot of open jobs for spouses at the consulate, and they are rarely filled so there isn't a lot of competition for the jobs. - Jun 2024

If you aren't working for the US government, you can get a work visa to teach English. They are cracking down on foreigners teaching/working on tourist visas. Pay is low, and I've heard employee abuse is real. Telecommuting is a challenge given the unreliable internet and the lack of data security. - Mar 2019

Local employment is not an attractive option, given the state of the local economy. It would be possible to teach English locally. Several spouses work in the Consulate. - Jul 2016

No. If you're in China with a diplomatic visa, you cannot work on the local economy. If you're not, you can teach and that's about it without decent Mandarin skills. - Aug 2014

No. We can't work in China, only at the consulate. There seem to be jobs there. - Nov 2013
