What is the typical dress code at work and in public places? Is formal dress ever required?

People dress conservatively here. Socks (or stockings) and shoes should be worn outdoors at all times. Few people wear very revealing clothing. In the workplace, suit and tie are the standards. That being said, watch out for the famous "Beijing Bikini" that middle-aged men will display on hot days. :-) - Jul 2016
