Are there any unusual problems with insects or other infestations in housing?
We have had problems with ants a few times. Cockroaches sometimes come in when the neighborhood sprays outside. Regular remedies seem to work. - Mar 2023
No. The occasional spider trots across the wall but they are nothing to write home about. A termite got into one of my dressers once, but I caught it and handled it quickly and have not had any more problems. I've seen snakes here and there but again, all small and harmless. - Oct 2022
There are lots of tiny ants, but that's pretty normal for the area. We have a family of (adorable) small geckos living somewhere in our house. Guatemala doesn't have many unpleasant critters in the housing. The mosquitos where we live are AWFUL, though. No matter what we do and even with paying for spraying in the yard, there are always some mosquitos in the house and we all have at least a couple bites at all times. Malaria is not a concern here, luckily. - Oct 2022
When we first arrived we had a problem with small ants. After a few Clorox cleanings and raid spray at night time they are all gone. We haven't had any problems. Some OFF spray will also come in hand if you have small kids who mosquitos love. - Jul 2021
There are mosquitos and no-see-ums, but nothing major. No malaria in the city, but we've had a few friends come down with Dengue here. Thankfully, the spider situation is minor -- always one of my top criteria when evaluating a post, ha! - Jan 2020
We've had far fewer insects than I would've expected. An initial infestation of tiny sugar ants when we moved in was quickly resolved. Our biggest problem has been tiny moths, a minor annoyance at best. Mosquitos were a problem in our first rainy season here, but the Embassy installed window screens, which dramatically improved matters. - Mar 2019

Not much. You see the occasional cockroach in the city but it's pretty rare. The houses and apartments sometimes have silverfish or ants, but again, it's rare. - Apr 2014
Bugs were not a problem in Guatemala city perhaps because of the altitude. Some cities and areas on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts might have some problems but nothing to be concerned about. - Jan 2014
