How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?
You can mostly get by with none, relying on Google Translate in a pinch. That said, it can be very useful to learn some to navigate medical offices, shopping, etc. There are many local language classes that cater to new immigrants. - Aug 2023
The basics really go a long way with the locals but not necessary. So many different languages spoken here. Classes through the Embassy aren’t as easy or readily available to sign up for but maybe due to COVID restrictions. - Mar 2022
You can usually find someone that speaks some level English. Being about to read Hebrew letters helps at the grocery store since most things are spelled out in English but written in Hebrew. The EBO has a great intense course that will set you up great. OPLIM this is a course set up by the government for new people to Israel. A great way to meet locals. There are many other options from private tutors, DSI has free classes and IWC. - Sep 2021
It's nice to know how to say hello, please and thank you but you don't need any Hebrew to get around. I have not had any problems without Hebrew. Sometimes you use lots of hand gestures, sometimes you use your phone app, sometimes another customer helps... it always works out. - Aug 2013
