What is the typical dress code at work and in public places? Is formal dress ever required?

People dress formally for business meetings: suits, slacks, tailored outfits of African fabric. The culture is conservative and out of respect, I would avoid more revealing attire in public, such as shorts, tank tops. - Sep 2022

A really cool mix of standard business casual (and sometimes formal suits if you're doing a high-level Ministerial meeting or something) and West African styles. From hand dyed cloths to collared shirts, as long as you're clearly making an effort to look presentable, just about anything goes! If you like West African fabrics, this is a great place to have tailors make your clothes. They may not get it exactly how you want the first try, but they’re willing to revisit and adjust until it’s precisely bespoke. - Jun 2021

Guineans often wear local dress. Foreigners usually wear dresses or suits to work, or at least a shirt and long pants. If you attend the Marine Corps ball, you could wear formal attire, but even there, I've seen pretty informal outfits. - Nov 2019

Formal. - May 2016

Business suits at work, casual in public. - Sep 2009

It varies at work. Some are in suits, some business casual. In public, no shorts. - May 2009

Like most west Africans, Guineans dress sharply. Suits and dresses are the norm at the embassy, although a tie and shirt sleeves in really hot weather won't raise eyebrows. Expats can get away with shorts and flip-flops in public and even in restaurants, but should really try a little harder. - Mar 2008
