Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?
No quarantine. Friends with pets have been able to find veterinarian services, but I don't have a pet so cannot speak to the quality. - Aug 2022
Yes! There are several recommended veterinarians who are well acquainted with how to get your animals in and out of Egypt. There is no quarantine required. We flew our dog in cargo on Lufthansa and it was a very straightforward process. I was surprised to see how much Egyptians care for street animals despite most not having pets of their own. It can be intimidating to walk your dog because of the packs of street dogs, but the bowabs are always helpful. There are several recommended pet kennels and it's possible to find people willing to stay with your dog at your home while you're traveling. - Mar 2022
I didn't have a pet but I heard that people found good vets in the area. No quarantine required coming into the country. Will have to take into account when you arrive with your pet that it might be super hot and that might affect when your pet can arrive. Some people used airlines, but several people used international pet shippers. - Dec 2021
No quarantine upon entry. We have a 50 pound dog. There are a couple of kennels, you will read good and bad posts about each one. We've had good service with East Wind (an hour from Maadi) but be sure to book them far in advance if possible. Veterinarians seem to be everyone, some speak English. Try to find one that uses more western practices. There are a lot of street dogs and cats. Be careful with them when walking your dog, they usually are not aggressive but that is just a risk. You will see people petting them and loving on them and swearing they are good dogs (usually they are) but we also know quite a few people who have been bitten by street dogs. Get your rabies shot. There is not a lot of green space for dog walking, you are taking them on the street (lots of dog poop everywhere) or into a green traffic circle. We take our dog to Wadi Degla to run free or even on leash but there are also a lot of feral dogs there as well. Keep your dogs shots up to date. - Feb 2021
We chose not to bring our cat to Egypt and left him with family in the US. We were concerned about evacuation and having issues getting him out during one. People do have cats and dogs and I believe are fairly happy with their vet service. Some speak English and many make house calls.
Walking dogs can be challenging as there are many street dogs, some of whom are very aggressive towards other dogs (though not typically towards people). Most apartments do not have green space, though there are a few ground floor apartments with small yards attached. The US residential compounds have green space. We had a poor experience with an embassy staff member who also provided veterinary services during his personal time. He checked out our pet twice and we didn't feel the was competent as a veterinarian. There are good veterinarian service options around Zamalek and in Maadi. Ask around for recommendations when you arrive. - Sep 2017
I didn't have pets in Cairo, but people who did used several vets and seemed happy with them. Be careful about tarmac temperatures if you are shipping pets in/out of Cairo. I think there are vaccination requirements, etc. but don't know too much about them. Lots of people have pets in the areas in which expats tend to live. - May 2017

No. We have two cats. There is ample pet care available. The only complaint I have heard is that dogs are confined to the apartment. There are a lot of dogs on leashes in the early evening, though. They seem happy. - Oct 2014
No. I don't believe this is a pet friendly post since there is no green space near our apartment, lots of strays and trash on the streets. Also, Egyptians use poison liberally for rats and strays. We chose to leave our beloved dog with family in the States. - Aug 2014

There is no quarantine for incoming animals, nor is there a quarantine for animals going from Egypt to the US. There is long waiting period for animals going from Egypt to the EU, related to the rabies testing, but not an actual quarantine in the receiving EU country. - Feb 2013
