Niamey - Post Report Question and Answers

What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

Embassy has lots of EFM jobs. Don't know of anyone that works on the local economy. - Aug 2022

There were several positions open at the Embassy for EFMs, including some part-time positions. Employment was also available at local schools, if you had the necessary qualifications. Employment on the local economy was possible, but I don't recall anyone actually doing it - also French fluency was a must. The internet connection was just about good enough for teleworking, so some spouses were able to do so. - Apr 2020

Jobs are opening up for spouses. No telecommuting as far as I know. Both full and part-time positions are available. - Jul 2019

The majority worked at the embassy. There were a few with NGO positions. Telecommuting would be impossible based on the slow internet service. - Oct 2017

Some work at the American school or embassy, but most stayed at home or volunteered. There is no possibility to telecommute as the internet is terrible. - Oct 2017

Teaching is a possibility and volunteer work is plentiful. Career continuity likely won't be had for spouses who came along and likely no one would move to Niamey without first having a job (otherwise, what are you doing there??). - Aug 2015

Not unless you've always felt called to sell kleenex and phone cards at one of the city's stoplights. However, the schools are always looking for volunteers and are willing to pay top dollar (read: you'll be volunteering, or at best making $10 an hour). - Jul 2013
