Rome - Post Report Question and Answers
What is the relative size of the expatriate community? How would you describe overall morale among expatriates?
There seems to be a big divide of people who love Rome and people who hate Rome. We lean towards hating it. Those that love Rome are either single men, married couples without kids, and single women - in that order. Married couples with kids often get frustrated. - Aug 2024
Rome has a large expat community of students aged 18-22 and then 24-30 (postgrad/masters programs), especially in Trastevere and San Lorenzo areas. As a capital city, there is obviously a large expat community of non-students as well. - Sep 2022
Huge. Most people have a short honeymoon with Rome until they realize it's impossible to get anything done here, and Romans are generally really not very nice people to strangers. - Oct 2014
Extremely large. - May 2013
Huge. Some days I just can't get away from Americans, even when on vacation in a remote hilltown. - Apr 2012
Huge! I can't believe how many of the local staff at the embassy are Americans living in Rome. Plus, the embassy itself is pretty big. - Aug 2010
On the smaller side; Milan is a large center of business and finance, so many expats live there as well. - Apr 2009
Pretty big. Even bigger if you mix in the Brits and the Aussies. - Feb 2008
Massive. - Feb 2008
