Cape Town - Post Report Question and Answers
What kinds of gyms or other sports/workout facilities are available? Are they expensive?
Virgin Active gyms seem the most prevalent in terms of membership gyms. The mountains and the outdoors provide ample active resources for exercise. - Aug 2021
Stonehurst estate has a gym and there are Virgin Active gyms near the other housing. Cost is similar to the US. - Apr 2021
There are two or three big gym chains here, one of which is right next to the USA Consulate. They're generally fine and probably cheaper than UK/US prices. CrossFit-type places are popping up now, but outdoor activities like biking, running, hiking, surfing, etc., are how most get exercise. - Feb 2018
The gated communities will often have gyms that are free to use for residents, and there are plenty of gyms scattered throughout the city. Many Capetonians enjoy cycling, hiking, etc. Jogging unfortunately is not recommended outside gated communities or other secure areas due to the high crime rate -- in general, do not jog, hike or cycle alone, or after dark. - Oct 2017
Plenty of very high quality gyms. South Africans are fitness nuts to the point that "gym" is a verb. Costs are roughly on par with the United States but gyms also come with free classes or training options. - May 2014
Cape Townians are extremely outdoor-oriented, as you would expect from the home of the Cape Argus bike race and the Two Oceans marathon. Even in the "soggy" months of July and August, there are bike riders, joggers, and walkers in the parks and on the roads. The Consulate has a small gym "in house" but there are bunches of gyms and classes--yoga, Pilates, spin, etc--on offer at the local places. - Aug 2013
