Milan - Post Report Question and Answers

What typical restaurants, food delivery services, and/or takeout options are popular among expatriates?

Aperitivo is excellent here, and there are of course countless options for Italian food. There are some great Chinese, Indian, Ethiopian, Japanese restaurants; I have yet to find a Tex Mex place I like. Delivery companies abound (Uber Eats, Foodora, Deliveroo, and Glovo). - Jun 2018

Most restaurants offer a variety of Italian regional cuisine. Ethnic restaurants vary in quality and are seldom as good as those we are used to from the DMV area. And those that are, are usually very expensive. Food delivery is available via 'deliveroo' and from various pizza places. We haven't used any, and I don't know who has. - Sep 2016

Fast food is McDonald's, Burger King, Turkish kebabs, and pizza. The pizza that you can get fast (i.e. pre-made and sitting, waiting for you to buy by the slice) is hit and miss. Best way to eat pizza here is at a sit down restaurant. The kebabs places are surprisingly abundant and addictive. I almost forgot the panini (sandwiches) and piadine (wraps) which you can get at the bars at every street corner. By the way, a bar is not a place you go to get drunk. It is where you go to get your coffee. If you want to be a part of the culture here, you need to figure out the coffee system. It's complicated, it's fun, and it's essential to Milanese life. If you don't drink caffeine, there are still options for you. There are lots of Italian restaurants in Milan - and although most of it is good, not all is. It is difficult to find non-Italian restaurants in this city, but they do exist if you hunt. You see, Italians believe Italian food to be the best, so why eat anything else? - Aug 2013

This is Italy. Italians live to eat. If you are looking for "fast food," go somewhere else. - Jun 2010

Anyone who's looking for fast food in Italy needs to rethink their priorities. That said, there's a lot of good Italian restaurants here (duh!), but say goodbye to Thai food! There are a handful of Mexican joints (about as good as in your local mall, i.e. not very) and some good, pricey Japanese. There are some cheaper Japanese places, mostly run by Chinese people; cooked food is generally fine, sushi is riskier. - Dec 2008

Fast food is available such as McDonald's. Resturants are plenty but very expensive and usually an all-night affair. Not good when you have little ones joining you. - Jan 2008
