What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

Yes, with the caveat that labor laws are extremely strict. It is very difficult (though not impossible) to get a work permit, and it may be impossible if you have a diplomatic passport (depending on the embassy... Americans have an agreement with the government allowing spouses to work, the Germans do not, so there are a lot of bored German housewives/husbands around). - Aug 2011
