Beijing - Post Report Question and Answers
Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?
It's almost impossible to get a pet into China right now. We left our cat in the US with a family member. It's doable, but costly and difficult. Once here, food and vet services are easily accessible. - Nov 2021
The city of Beijing is still not registering pets, and the Embassy is not supporting pet transport on incoming charter aircraft. Unless you can find a private shipping company, the “new normal” here means that Embassy Beijing may be a pet-free posting. Although decent veterinary care is available, animal neglect or abuse is still common here. Pets are often abandoned once their owners tire of them. - Aug 2020
Yes, and it depends. Lots of regulations on dogs. - May 2020
Sorry, do not have a pet. That said, I understand the import regulations change all the time, making it more and more difficult to bring in and take your pet out of the country. There is a long list of prohibited dog breeds. - Nov 2019
I don't have a pet but many people do and there are two vets within walking distance from our house which is close to the International schools. - Oct 2017
Yes, 30 days in the airport unless you have a diplomatic note from the embassy requesting a home quarantine. - Dec 2015
I heard dogs, cats and birds were allowed into the country but it's complicated and costly. - Aug 2014
Yes, there are restrictions on size and breed and there is a 2 week quarantine policy. The quarantine is typically waived for Embassy types, but you will want to do all of your homework on this. Vets and kennels are readily available and good quality. - Jul 2014
Not sure - Jun 2013
No, just have up-to-date health certificates. - Aug 2011
Yes - Apr 2011
One of my co-workers had to quarantine his cat on the way in, but it didn't have to be quarantined on return to the US. - Jan 2011
No. But not all pets are allowed in all parts of the city. Large dogs have to stay in the suburbs. - Apr 2010
Don't know about now. Didn't use to be. - Jan 2010
