Valletta - Post Report Question and Answers

What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

There are some jobs for spouses at the Embassy, but some spouses did not choose to work. I knew one spouse who did work full-time on the local economy; they were not paid the same as they would have been for equal work in the United States, but the job entitled them to free daycare when their children were ready for it. - May 2023

Occasional EFM openings. The online gaming sector is doing very well, and the economy in general, so positions are available in the local economy. - Oct 2018

Not really many jobs on the local economy. The wages are extremely low, so not worth the hassle. Maltese make it extremely hard for foreigners to work. Commonwealth citizens and EU citizens have a somewhat easier time. Others not so much. And, businesses have to "prove" why they couldn't hire a Maltese and have to essentially sponsor you. One spouse works at the international school. Another does some educational consulting. A few work at the Embassy in EFM positions. Internet is very good, so telecommuting would be feasible. - Sep 2016

Not really. - Jan 2014

No. - Feb 2010

No. The Maltese are really bad about issuing work permits and the relatively insular, closed-shop, nature of most businesses make foreign hires unlikely without some specialized (law/medicine/accounting) skill. - Feb 2010

Yes, but you need a work permit, and the competition with EU citizens is high. - Jul 2009
