What is the typical dress code at work and in public places? Is formal dress ever required?
Given the temperate climate, I would say that the general dress code at work was business casual for women, while men tended to wear suits and ties. The Maltese tend to dress smart casual and dress to impress. If you are a member of the diplomatic community or a supporter of the arts, you can expect to need formal dress for balls and galas. - May 2023
Business to business casual does just fine. Public, whatever seems to go. Occasionally if you go to a nice restaurant or a formal event. - Oct 2018
Section heads are usually suit/tie. Malta is not a super formal place. Higher-end private sector contacts, dip corp and government officials tend to go suit/tie. Others as their work requires. Out in public, it's all over the place. Nice Euro dress to seeing people in t-shirt/shorts. Maltese don't have much disposable income, so they tend to dress on the lower end unless their position demands other. In the summer/hotter months, it seems like 80% of the country wears flip flops. I get tired of looking at a bunch of jacked up feet. - Sep 2016
Business at work. Smart casual in public. Women do dress more provocative and wear tight clothing here. Maltese like to dress up for evening events. In the summer, anything goes. Swimwear is tiny. - Jan 2014

During the summer, shorts and casual clothes are typical. Dress code at work is not too formal, but people dress up for evening parties. - Jul 2009
