Valletta - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there any particular health concerns? What is the quality of available medical care? What medical conditions typically require medical evacuation?

Medical care is quality; many families chose to give birth in the local hospitals instead of returning home or traveling elsewhere. The diplomatic community has the option to medevac for serious procedures, but I am not aware of anyone having done so while I was there. We had ready access to the private hospital and specialists when needed. Medical costs are low, especially in comparison to the United States. For example, an out-of-pocket MRI will cost you no more than $500. - May 2023

Watch out for mold in your residence. Medical care is good but for special or non standard issues you would have to go to the UK or Italy. - Oct 2018

None to speak of really. Embassy has a local nurse and there is a local doctor that has office hours once/week at the Embassy. Also by appointment at her office. And, there is a private clinic/hospital that most Americans go to. The public hospital is much larger and has great speciality capabilities, but it's a zoo, so most go to the local private hospital. (Maltese get free healthcare for life and they seem to like their medical procedures here, aside from not generally being that healthy to start with, so the public hospital is always super busy). - Sep 2016

No health concerns other than sunburn. The medical care here is adequate, most offices being through the hospitals. Dentists and other services are readily available. Major health concerns sometimes medevac to London. - Jan 2014

Good. - Feb 2010

Medical care is very accessible and affordable at the private hospitals. Unique or grave illnesses would best be treated off island. - Feb 2010

No concerns. Good medical care with a new hospital and well-trained physicians. - Jul 2009
