Are local buses, trams, trains or taxis safe and affordable?
All safe, all affordable. Uber price is comparable to the U.S. - Apr 2025
Safe, middling priced. They don't come far enough into the suburbs, nor do they run very often in most non-downtown areas. Bus lines do not connect to the Sydney train. You can walk the two large blocks from the north side to the Murray bus (which also has a direct airport stop in Sydney). Taxis and Ubers are safe. Read up on sitting up front when alone here -cultural norm. - May 2023
Yes and yes. We used taxis, ubers, buses and trains - all lovely, clean and affordable (though not cheap - just "Australia" affordable). - Aug 2020
All are safe, all are expensive. The train only goes to Sydney. - May 2012
Safe, but not always convenient. Local public transport leaves a lot to be desired. Taxis are prohibitively expensive. Buses and trains to Sydney and Melbourne are great. - May 2011
Yes, but not cheap. - Dec 2010
Safe yes, but not convenient--some neighboorhoods don't even have bus service. This is a hard city to be in without a car. - Nov 2010
Trains are the best way to get between major cities. They are very cheap, comfortable and reliable. - Apr 2010
Public transportation is widely available, but you still need to have car here -- especially if you have little ones. Shopping areas and housing are far apart. - Oct 2009
Taxis are expensive and often not reliable. No trains and bus system is fine if it goes to your neighborhood. - Apr 2009
