What are some typical ways to socialize, either with local people or with other expatriates? Are there groups or clubs that you can recommend?
Join a hobby club. Sports, crafts, volunteering, arts are all represented here. Websites are in English. They're on social media. There are a ton of resources and like-minded people of all stripes here. - May 2023
I joined a book club that included other Americans, and I was part of a group of mums who ran, but otherwise, as noted above, you make your own fun. People go to Sydney or the beach for the weekend, or they go skiing or they meet up at a local pool. It mostly just feels like you are in the US living your life most of the time (except for the accents and the kangaroos in the streets). - Aug 2020

Lots of options. You have to work a bit to find the spots you like, but you can find pretty much anything you would want to do here. Canberra can be sleepy sometimes, but there is a lot of fun to be found if you go looking for it. - May 2011
