Hermosillo - Post Report Question and Answers

Is it easy to make friends with locals here? Are there any prejudices or any ethnic groups who might feel uncomfortable here?

I haven't tried to make friends with locals due to narco concerns. The local staff at the consulate are phenomenal and very friendly. Regarding prejudices and racism in Hermosillo, I can't pinpoint a specific incident/trend but unfortunately there is bias and prejudice everywhere. - Sep 2024

This is first post where I feel like I have actually made local friends that I will keep in touch with. I have found them to be very open and friendly. - Jun 2023

I touched on this earlier, but yes it can be easy. The better your Spanish, the easier it will be. Other cities in Mexico have bullying issues at school, sometimes encouraged by parents, but I have not heard of that here. There have been some instances of racism against FSOs, by locals and by CBP at the border. - Sep 2022

It can be hard a first to break into the local scene here however, a good place to start is with the local staff. The local staff is very friendly and outgoing and they can introduce you to other people as you get to know them. I've had a great time going to events and having a good time with the local staff at Post. - Sep 2022

No, people outside the consulate are extremely guarded and have established circles. The consulate community sorely lacks diversity. Prejudice is largely economical. - Aug 2022
