Hermosillo - Post Report Question and Answers
What is the relative size of the expatriate community? How would you describe overall morale among expatriates?
There is no expat community in Hermosillo. The expat community is the US consulate. Morale at post is excellent. People are very happy working at the consulate and living in Hermosillo. - Sep 2024
Small. It's just us. I often get the question along the lines of "what are you doing here?". Expats from other places are even more rare. I've met one family from Canada. I feel the morale at the consulate is good! Most people come with the right expectations and we have a great community here. - Jun 2023
Small. It is basically the U.S. consulate and then a handful of expat business people that you'll only come across at school or the country club. - Sep 2022
Only diplomatic community here. There are a few expats, mainly retirees but they keep more to themselves. Ford Motor company is here however, I have yet to meet anyone who works there. - Sep 2022
The Consulate is the ONLY diplomatic community in town. It can be very isolating. Curtailments are a frequent occurrence for USG personnel and LE staff, ironically due to lack of USG DOS FS personnel to fully support post. - Aug 2022
Small. We're the only gig in town. I've never met another expat in Hermosillo, although my husband has finally found 3 Brazilians, which is a lot in this town! Most people are fine with Hermosillo and try to appreciate the positives. As I mentioned, a lot of people seem to be disillusioned with overseas life because of the constant reminders of the U.S. - Aug 2015
VERY small. The consulate has a small number of officers, and there are several other agencies in the consulate. Anyone else that is here is most likely from the Ford plant or a Canadian mining company. - Apr 2013
Small. There are a few Americans and Canadians working with some of the factories in Sonora, but not very many in Hermosillo. Other than the U.S. consulate, there is no other diplomatic mission in Hermosillo. - Dec 2009
Small compared to cities like Tijuana, Saltillo, Monterrey, Mexico City. But, there have been expats in Sonora going back almost 200 years and they are well accepted. - Feb 2008
