Hermosillo - Post Report Question and Answers
Is this a good city for LGBT expatriates? Why or why not?
Yes. The PRIDE parade is well attended. I see rainbow flags around the city. I heard there are drag shows and drag brunches but haven't been. - Sep 2024
I think so, especially in the context of Mexico. Coming from two previous posts with very closed off LGBTQ+ communities, I have noticed a lot more of the community here in public. It is not like the U.S. and Sonorans are conservative in general, but I have not heard of any violence or strong discrimination like I did at other posts. - Sep 2022
Yes, this city is very LGBTQIA friendly. I've seen the flag outside of several businesses around town. In addition, I've seen several LGBTQIA Mexicans in Hermosillo. Same sex marriage is legal in Sonora and in 28 of the 32 states in all of Mexico. I've lived in another area of Mexico and Sonora is definitely a lot friendlier to the LGBTQIA community. - Sep 2022
These circles appear to be extremely private. I have yet to meet someone who is openly LGBTQIA in Hermosillo. There is, however, an annual parade with a large attendance. - Aug 2022
Okay. Sonora is still quite conservative, so LGBT issues aren't really out in the open. - Aug 2015
Mexican culture in general is relatively intolerant of gay and lesbian lifestyles, although Mexico City is the much more accepting. In the past decade or so, Mexico as a whole has become less discriminatory, at least in the outward sense, but negative attitudes still abound. - Dec 2009
