Tegucigalpa - Post Report Question and Answers

Are credit cards widely accepted and safe to use locally? Are ATMs common and do you recommend using them? Are they safe to use?

They are widely accepted.... but aren't always successfully processed so have cash (Lempiras) as a backup. - Mar 2024

CCs are widely accepted but I would stick with visa/mastercard. My US debit card works here and there is minimal concern with identify theft from using them. - Jan 2024

Credit cards are accepted everywhere and I've not had any problems using them. We usually take advantage of the ATM at the embassy but there are also ATM "rooms" at the local shopping malls that have a guard. We've used them a couple of times with no issues. However, we rarely carry cash and just use our cards everywhere. - Aug 2023

Yes. - Feb 2022

Credit cards are widely accepted and are safe to use. If travelling to smaller towns, it is advisable to bring cash just in case. ATMs are very common in Tegucigalpa and other major cities. - Oct 2019

Cards are accepted in stores. For markets and street vendors you need cash. - Jul 2018

Credit cards accepted almost everywhere, though very rarely the transmission network is down so places can't process your payment. ATMs are common and reliable. - May 2018

No issues with credit cards. The only ATM I use is the one at the embassy. - May 2018

I've never had a problem with credit cards. Most restaurants and the grocery stores accept them. I try to pay in cash at restaurants as waiters may take 20 minutes to bring back your credit card receipt. The embassy ATM is usually working and the bank there will cash a check. - Apr 2018

Do not use them locally! Be VERY careful when using ATMs. Try to use those in western hotels. - Jun 2016

- Fine. Most places take credit cards. We haven't had a problem. We use most ATMs as well. - Feb 2016

I don't use ATM outside the Embassy, but have used credit and debit cards without problems. - Aug 2015

I have only used the ATM at the Embassy, as well as (extremely rarely) those at the Intercontinental Hotel and the Mall Multiplaza. I experienced the first debit card fraud ever in my life here. - Jul 2015

I've only used an outside ATM--at a bank--once. Because of the security environment and people here doing really shady things, I withdraw money for the weekend when I'm at the Embassy. - Dec 2014

Use the ones at the Embassy or the international hotels. - Oct 2014

Safe in general but it's best to use inside ATMs. - Sep 2014

You can use them everywhere. Be mindful of phishing scams though, check your account activity often. - Aug 2014

Safe in Mission or inside a bank. - Jun 2014

Safest to use the ones at work or inside a bank. - Mar 2014

It's better not to use credit cards. - Jan 2014

It's safe at bigger stores and nicer restaurants. AID and Embassy have ATM. - Oct 2013

In my experience it is safe, although I only use mine at big stores. - Jun 2013

Plenty of people had their info stolen. - Jun 2013

We only use the ATM at the embassy, but we have used a credit card at larger stores and restaurants. Our credit card was only compromised once while we have been here. - Apr 2013

Well, we've already had a debit card eaten in an ATM, but we use our cc's a lot with no problems. - Nov 2009

We always get our money from the bank at the embassy. - Oct 2009
