Tegucigalpa - Post Report Question and Answers

What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

Family member employment is abundant, however some of the recent issues with hiring, FSFRC issues, and the unbelievable length of time clearances have been taking has left a very frustrated tone amongst the EFM community at post. Many supervisors at post perplexed with how to fill needed positions in a reasonable amount of time. The entire embassy community seems to want it to improve, but that has not minimized the difficulties expressed by the EFMs. - Mar 2024

Can only speak for the US Mission and there are an abundance of employment opportunities but you have to be part of the Mission. - Jan 2024

Most EFMs work at the embassy, a couple work at the international schools. There are a few that telework with US based companies. I don't know anything about local salary scales. - Aug 2023

In my opinion, EFM positions can be difficult to obtain. - Feb 2022

Secretary and consular assistant jobs mostly. - Jul 2018

Lots of embassy jobs. If you speak Spanish well you can work for development implementers, the UN, etc. Also, lots of demand for English-speaking teachers, as almost all private schools are conducted mainly in English. - May 2018

Due to the hiring freeze, most EFMs do not have jobs, unless they were hired before the freeze. Some positions are slowly opening up now. It is not likely to find a job on the economy. There are some spouses who telework. - May 2018

There are a decent number of EFM jobs at the embassy, but the hiring freeze was really devastating for spouses. A lot of people do consulting from home. Not much on the local economy, but a few spouses have worked at Zamarano University. If you have an NGO/development background and/or can speak Spanish there would be opportunities. - Apr 2018

Not many options outside of the embassy. - Jun 2016

There was favoritism with the previous administration; hopefully the new management will be more fair. - Oct 2014

Hiring at the Embassy was neither fair nor transparent but with a new management that may change. - Sep 2014

I work part time in the consular section, but I would say overall it is difficult to find a job. I know a few teachers who sub at the American School or teach english. - Oct 2009
