Sofia - Post Report Question and Answers

Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?

Bulgaria is a perfect place for dogs (pets in generally but dogs have a great life here) Bulgarians love animals. Dogs are often seen in public and with their owners, at restaurants, cafes, hotels and even are allowed on public transport. If you take a walk through the parks (south park is right behind the embassy) you will see Bulgarians out walking their dogs. There are so many pet stores with pet supplies. Vet care is good and much more affordable than vets in America. We really love our vet here, she has taken good care of our pup. - Jun 2023

We didn’t bring pets to Bulgaria so we can’t speak to veterinarians, kennels, or entry for pets. If bringing pets you may want to consider that stray dogs are plentiful in Bulgaria. Even though most of the strays in the city are tame and won’t bother you or your pet, there are some packs that are extremely territorial. Another think you might want to think about is the disease carrying bugs like ticks or fleas. - Mar 2019

Not quarantined, but getting them here requires the usual traveling hoops. No experience with vet or kennel. - May 2016

No and good vet care. - Dec 2014

No, you follow the standard procedures for the EU (excluding the UK). When I brought my dog from the U.S., they didn't even check her papers in the airport, so procedures are not really followed or enforced. - Jun 2011
