Tijuana - Post Report Question and Answers

Knowing what you know now, would you still move to this city?

I would bid this post high if I had kids in school or needed US medical care. Or is I had a spouse who needed to work in the USA. Otherwise, it seems a lot like living in the US, minus the green space. Lots of people seek to extend because it is so convenient. If you want an international experience, go farther from the border. - Oct 2024

Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: It has been a great place to live for my spouse and I. The caveat is that I do not think I would want to do it twice, but assuming I could go back in time, I would still be happy with the fact that I chose to come to Tijuana. In summary, I am happy we came, we had a great time, but as they say “one can never go back;” and while I will always have the great memories, one set of Tijuana memories is plenty. - Apr 2023

Absolutely. It is a great post. A nice break if you've served in a harder post previously. - Nov 2017

No. I would try to go elsewhere in Mexico - D.F., Guad, even Monterrey. I hear morale is really low at the U.S. Consulate and I found that its hard to make friends. Family seems to bind people to Tijuana - and for many - they live here because it is cheaper and work across the border. So finding community is difficult. San Diego is a fantastic world class city but crossing the border gets so, so, so old and expensive. People are really nice and I love the artisan food culture but that's about it. - Apr 2014

I guess.... Whatever, it's okay. It could be a lot better, but the city is poorly administered. - Feb 2014

Yes, it was an interesting two years, but I really miss being able to walk the streets. It's such a shame that people spend so much time in their cars (on both sides of the border) given the beautiful weather. - Apr 2011

Yes. TJ is a bit of a hidden gem and San Diego is wonderful too. If you work in the consulate, the work-load and type of work is tough but fairly rewarding. - Mar 2011
