Lagos - Post Report Question and Answers

What is the air quality like at post (good/moderate/bad)? Are there seasonal air quality issues? Does the air quality have an impact on health?

There are seasonal air issues. During harmattan season (December- February) AQi can reach 300+ and it can be challenging being outside. - Mar 2024

It's not great but really only becomes an issue during Harmatan the dust season. Then it can be unpleasant for a month or so and you'll want to only be indoors. - Aug 2020

Air quality is an issue here, particularly during the dry season (harmattan). Some people who never suffered allergies in the United States had a hard time getting through harmattan. Harmattan makes it harder to go outside as the air is constantly dusty. When Harmattan isn't in effect, Lagos is constantly hot and humid. The weather is always hot, a few times in the winter it will be very pleasant early in the morning, but it doesn't last. - Jul 2020

Harmattan is very difficult for many, though it didn't particularly bother me. The heat and humidity do not help matters. - Jun 2019

Not great. There is a persistent haze of exhaust fumes, diesel, etc., and Harmattan (dust season) lasts for 2-3 months beginning in December. Running and biking outside will leave you smelling like exhaust. That being said, there are also lots of very lovely days with blue skies. - Mar 2018

Air quality is OK but during the Harmattan months (December through March) there's a layer of dust that goes everywhere. It can get very hot and humid. - May 2016

Poor from pollution, though the breeze from the ocean helps. Harmattan isn't great with the dust though. - Nov 2015

The air is moderate; it could be very humid sometimes. But during the raining season, June-August, the air is crisp and fresh after the rain, which is mostly heavy. - Dec 2011
