What are some interesting/fun things to do in the area? Can you recommend any “hidden gems"?
The secret to Managua is to get out of Managua. Go to Corn Island and enjoy a paradiscal beach vacation. Concepcion volcano on Ometepe Island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua is a challenge to climb. See and hear all the howler monkeys. Go swim in a volcanic lake where the water is a constant 25C all year round. Costa Rica is only 2.5 hours drive and a long border crossing away, and significantly more expensive than Nicaragua. - Feb 2024
Lots to do in the mainland, but Little Corn Island or the Caribbean coast is a must, you will disconnect, unwind, eat coconut bread and swim in turquoise waters! - Sep 2023

There are so many: the Pacific coast beaches, swimming in Laguna de Apoyo, hiking up one of the many volcanoes in the country, wandering the colonial streets on Granada, rum tasting at Flor de Cana, hiking in Somoto Canyon, kayaking around Ometepe Island. - Jun 2020

The nearest beaches are an hour away. Within 30 minutes you can reach the Volcan Masaya, the town of Masaya (wonderful artisan market), the historic city of Granada, hike at el Chocoyero (parakeet forest/waterfall) and much more. Managua has some good restaurants, a VIP theater (order sushi and drinks!) and a nice and safe (but small) mall to stroll around. - Mar 2012
