What is the typical dress code at work and in public places? Is formal dress ever required?

Business to business casual. - Jan 2022

Business at work, business casual to casual everywhere else. - Aug 2021

The embassy is business dress. Out in public, it is casual. Pre-COVID, there was the Marine Ball, which was the only formal event I attended. - May 2021

Typical embassy attire - no less than a polo shirt and Dockers. - Mar 2017

People here put a lot of stress on outward appearance, especially women. Even household help will arrive to work and go home nicely dressed and made up. For formal events people dress in very formal clothes, most women wear high heals, but it seems as though standards are relaxing somewhat. - Oct 2014

Professional, suits for men, skirts for women. - Sep 2011

Suits. In public men never wear shorts in warm weather (though I do sometimes). - Oct 2009

Formal. The locals we meet, including those that struggled to make ends meet, put their money into looking good. I agree with a previous poster--micro skirts, 3 inch heels, and low cut tops were prevalent. - Jul 2008

Fairly formal: suits/ties and at least jackets for men at work. Like much of the former Soviet Union, young women (in business or not) tend to dress like prostitutes - not realizing they look like that to Westernerns - flashy tight clothes, garish boots/shoes. It can take some time to realize your assistant or secretary is actually quite skilled once you get beyond the clothing choices. - Jan 2008
