Yerevan - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there personal security concerns to be aware of at this post? Please describe.

I wouldn't leave my phone out at a cafe. Taxi drivers will try to rip you off. Other than that, I didn't see much crime. - Jan 2022

It's a pretty safe country besides the usual safety precautions one takes in large cities. - Aug 2021

In general it is a pretty safe post. Maybe some petty crime. Some areas along the border are off limits because of the conflict with Azerbaijan, and of course, Iran is the neighbor to the south. - May 2021

Due to occasional demonstrations downtown, usually in Freedom Square or Republic Square, you should maintain personal awareness of your surroundings. It's generally very safe to walk the city, even at night in the less well maintained parts. - Mar 2017

Although three of the four borders are closed to us - the border to Iran is open, but not for Americans - the country is extremely safe. There are occasional incidents, of course, but they are few to the point that we are often lax. - Oct 2014

Not really, other than traffic. Driving habits here are poor and quite dangerous with little concern for pedestrians. Need to be alert when crossing the street. - Sep 2011

Very few. Yerevan is a very safe city for living or walking around. - Oct 2009

Tough in a difficult neighborhood, I find there aren't many security issues with Yerevan. I know of a couple of instances where folks who left a laptop or other valuables in plain site in the back seat of their car were victims of smash and grabs. The Embassy keeps a close eye on its residences by clustering most of its housing and through RSO's mobile patrol. Urban common sense sees most through fine. At the macro level, there is occasional sniper fire across the Armenia-Azerbaijan border; though I understand a good number of diaspora travel back and forth each summer, Nagorno-Karabakh is off limits to USG personnel. - Jul 2008

Almost none compared to any other city I've lived in. It's among the safest in the world. - Jan 2008
