What is the availability and cost of household help, and what types of help are typically employed by expatriates?

It ranges. We have someone come once a week for $130, but we have a large home (about 2500 sf). Nothing like what we could afford in some previous assignments. Some people do have full time help, however. - May 2024

Local help is US$10-$12/hour, for the most part the work ethic is very poor, and there is a high risk of theft. - Jun 2015

Cost more than in Africa and less than in Europe. We don't use anybody but my understanding is that those who do, usually get someone for one or two days per week at about US$75/day. - May 2015

Available, but expensive. A full time housekeeper would cost about $200-300 a week. Make sure they already have a work permit because you don't want to go through the hassle of getting one. All housekeepers will generally be Jamaican or Haitian. All gardeners are Haitian. - Jan 2011

Readily available. Housekeeper will charge between $40 and $70 for house cleaning. - Mar 2010

We pay our housekeeper US$9 per hour for two half-days per week. You can negotiate a lower rate if you hire someone for full days. - Feb 2009

US$50-70/day part time or US$200-$350/week full time. This is for nannies, housekeepers, and gardeners. - Dec 2008
