What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

There is no bilateral work agreement for embassy spouses, so if you want to work you either need to work at the embassy or telecommute. It's also possible to substitute teach at the American school. - Dec 2018
There is no bi-lateral work agreement. The recent lifting of the hiring freeze has been fantastic for EFMs. I think there are a sufficient number of jobs for those who want to work. It may not be your "dream job" or in the area you are used to working. But if you want to fill your time and earn some extra cash you should be able to get something. - Feb 2018
As far as I know, spouses are not allowed to work in the local economy due to being unable to obtain a working visa for outside of the Embassy. The only place where I have heard of employment opportunities was the American School TAISM and the British Academy. Otherwise, all employment would be within the embassy which is generally very small, so not many opportunities come up. - Aug 2017
For people associated with the Embassy, spouses can only work for the Embassy or TAISM. A few people have home-based businesses, but Omani law prohibits diplomat spouses from starting businesses or working on the local economy. - Oct 2014
Working on the local economy is not available to embassy family members, but TAISM has limited opportunities, as does the embassy. Other expats have good job opportunities with oil companies, consulting firms, construction firms, etc. - Jun 2012

Yes if you're coming on a contract you can do well, but if your here already and with a spouse it might be a little difficult. For diplomats there is no bilateral work agreement. - Feb 2010
