Are there any particular health concerns? What is the quality of available medical care? What medical conditions typically require medical evacuation?
The air quality was amazing and for the first time in my life, I had no allergies. Medical care seems to be inadequate from what I heard. - Jan 2022
No particular health concerns, other than regular stuff. Medical care is alright, not great, and anything serious gets medevacked. - Dec 2018
No health concerns really. Our embassy medical unit is very nice and helps with local economy referrals when needed. The local healthcare, though, is only sufficient for basic stuff. If you have something requiring a bit more expertise then I'd push for an evacuation. - Feb 2018
No major health concerns. Even though we are in the desert it is not too dusty and sand storms are not common. Humidity is extremely high for about 9 months of the year so trouble breathing is not uncommon, as well as anything like dehydration and fatigue due to the extreme heat in the summer. Hospitals are generally good and available. Doctors are usually expats. We have not had to undergo any medical procedures here except for minor things like blood work, flu etc. - Aug 2017
No major health concerns. The hospitals have Western trained doctors and can handle most medical emergencies. Dental, eye, and medical clinics are also staffed by western trained doctors and provide good care. Everyone speaks good English. - Oct 2014
No real health concerns, though a persistent "Muscat Cough" made the rounds during the dusty season. Medical care is moderately good, though serious cases tend to be sent to London or the U.S. - Jun 2012
No issues here. Medical care is OK.The private hospital is pretty decent. - May 2012
We came here after being told that the Medical care was good. I have not found that to be true. - Feb 2011
They definitely need to improve on this matter. I can list all sorts of misdiagnoses and mistreatments. I once visited a friend in the Sultan Qaboos emergency room and was appalled with how dirty and unhygienic. - Apr 2010
Allergies due from the dust but nothing much else. Medical seems to be okay but I've heard of a few cases where they missed diagnosed. Most of the serious cases get shipped out - Feb 2010
Just take precautions regarding the heat. With a little time and common sense, the intense heat really isn't all that bad; I actually miss it now. Medical care is generally good; the excellent embassy nurse can give you referrals. - Jan 2010
The dust can aggravate allergies. There are some very qualified doctors here and dentists. My husband had eye lasik surgery here with excellent results as have many, many others. - Mar 2009
Medical care is available at high-quality private hospitals and clinics. Many specialists are American or European trained. Some expatriates remain in country for childbirth and surgeries although others prefer to return home out of concern regarding follow-up care and the ability to deal with unexpected complications. - Feb 2008
