This is an oil/gas economy, but the people are oppressed and poor. Do not flaunt your belongings: I have heard that some local employees have been robbed at home. - Apr 2021

At the beginning of COVID-19, there were some robberies in various places.  No one was hurt. Most of the housing options for diplomats have a yard with a gate meant to be operated by a person (not automatic or electric). - Jul 2020

Malabo is actually a fairly safe place to live. RSO recently forbid the use of taxis due to poor maintenance of the vehicles, drunk driving, and a recent surge in taxi crime on the mainland. For Americans (and especially diplomats), you are usually not bothered by the police. - Sep 2014


Just petty crime. One benefit of an overbearing government is fewer security concerns. Vehicle break-ins do occur, though not frequent. - Jun 2012
