Kathmandu - Post Report Question and Answers

What do you wish you had known about this particular city/country before moving there?

Nepalis have no sense of time. A two-month project will take six months, a noon lunch will probably happen at 1:30. Flights are not considered delayed until they are delayed more than one hour. As I sit here, a local told me she was coming by my house at eleven, which she then moved to one, and it's now 1:15 with no sign of her. For someone who is punctual, this can be infuriating. - Jun 2024

I traveled to this region before so I had an idea, but it can be hard getting used to a dirty city without green spaces. - Aug 2022

How horribly dirty it is, how expensive trekking is, how bad the air is, people will steal and swindle you every chance they can, and how you should bring absolutely everything you will need. - Aug 2019

How to drive a manual transmission car. I don't really think any amount of preparation would have changed my experience. Unless you've lived in India it's a culture/living experience like nothing else. - Aug 2015

How little the government is capable of doing. - May 2014

That is was so dirty and polluted. I am so blown away by the filth that I don't have any desire to see anything else here. I don't want to see temples or monasteries because I know it will be just full of trash and driving to get anywhere brings me to tears. I wish I had known that this city is only for people who love trekking and camping and mountain biking. If you like these on occasion or don't like this, you will be bored to tears here. - Apr 2014

That it's on an earthquake fault line, somehow I missed that in the post report. - Dec 2013
