Stockholm - Post Report Question and Answers
How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?
None, the overwhelming majority of Swedes (particularly in urban areas) speak English. Local language classes are available and affordable if you want to learn Swedish. - Dec 2020
I'd say none. Swedes speak English fluently except for little kids. I was not given language training before coming here and it has only been a hinderance with websites and phone messages that aren't translated. For in-person interactions, I've never had a problem in any situation just using English. - Sep 2020
Swedes are generally fluent in English; recent immigrants are focused on learning Swedish, so they might not speak English. - May 2020
Everyone in Stockholm speaks English. Swedish is nice to have, but completely unnecessary. - Jan 2017
None. Everyone speaks English! - May 2015
English is incredibly pervasive here. Would be nice to understand some basic Swedish, especially just to understand the signs, but very easy to get by without it. - Aug 2014
Some for fun or if you go out far into the countryside. Everyone, almost, speaks English - Oct 2008
None. I have never seen so many english-speaking foreigners in my life. You'd think you were in the states sometimes. Just ask in English- they will understand you perfectly, from the bus driver to the grocery clerk to the car mechanic. - Aug 2008
