Tbilisi - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of vehicle(s) including electric ones do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, infrastructure, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car or vehicles do you advise not to bring?

Bring anything that can take a beating. The driving is insane and most people get into at least one accident while living here. - Aug 2024

Do not take a car you care about in any way; take an absolute beater or a tank. It's literally demolition derby in the city. I would recommend bringing some type of four-wheel drive for exploring. Georgia has really amazing nature and it's a must for navigating to some of these amazing places. - Aug 2024

“Pre-dinged” 5-10 year old vehicle recommended. Don’t bring anything you love too much as it will get further dinged while you’re here. Carjackings and theft are not an issue here, the biggest safety issue is most Georgian cars are previously salvaged and imported from America. They’re rebuilt decently well but I’ve heard that some mechanics cut corners when it comes to inserting a new airbag, good seatbelts etc (and I’ve noticed in some Bolt cars the seatbelt light is on for the passenger seat). If you buy used on the economy, 98% you’re buying a salvage from back home. The same goes for buying from diplomats who bought on the economy (or whose original owner bought on the economy). Do your homework and check the vin and Carfax. - Aug 2023
