Athens - Post Report Question and Answers
Are there any particular health concerns? What is the quality of available medical care? What medical conditions typically require medical evacuation?
No, nothing in particular. Medical and dental care was readily available and great quality! - Oct 2023
The medical care here is something you should seriously look into. Most of the doctors were US-educated or at least practiced in the US or Western Europe, but the equipment is from the 1970s (at best). I would highly recommend seeking any serious medical treatment in Germany or the US. If you are unfortunate enough to have a medical emergency, be prepared for even more chaos than a normal emergency room with people charging you before each test and in some cases, it's my understanding of looking for bribes for better care. If you have a medical need or something you think might come up, you should do some serious research first. - Jan 2023
Private hospital, billing is a pain, in my opinion, but people don't complain otherwise. - Mar 2022
No health concerns. Good medical care and affordable. Same for orthodontics; about half the cost of the U.S. Loved that appointments could be made at night; we often had an ortho appointment at 7 or 8 pm. Getting medication was also easy and cheap. - Jan 2020
Medical care is great and medevacs are very uncommon given quality of local care. - Mar 2018
Very good medical care in the country. - Oct 2017
Medical care is generally good here. - Jan 2017
Medical care is good here in Athens. Many families have babies here and elect not to return home for the birth. Athens is a very green city so people with allergies may require medication at different times of the year here. - Dec 2016
The med unit at the Emabassy is great. I loved the nurses and doctors while we were there. I needed to use local dentists and hospitals and did not have much trouble other than language issues. The Greeks rely on a bribery system, so I did have some friends who experienced some problems with hospital stays, especially lack of bedside manners where children were involved. - Sep 2013
Health concerns would be limited to sun-related maladies and traffic accidents! Medical care is available, but better at private hospitals than the publicly-run National Healthcare System. - Jul 2012
Private hospitals are available and quality is good. - Jun 2010
Medical is great. Pharmacies are the best! You can get anything. Lots of U.S. trained docs. - Jan 2009
You can drink the water here, although it's sometimes brown. - Dec 2008
I've found good pediatricians who speak English and were trained in the States. - Jun 2008
