Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?
There are a couple trusted vet offices here, and services are inexpensive compared to the U.S. No quarantine is necessary upon arrival. If coming from the U.S., get your dog a 3-year rabies vaccine with proper documentation. Exporting your pets is a nightmare. Azerbaijan is a rabies high-risk country, and there are stray cats and dogs all over the place. - Aug 2023
Much better than I expected. Lots of pet stores and DPO takes 2 weeks, so decent timing to get anything you can't find locally, which tends to be more expensive than ordering online. Baku doesn't have the green areas we think of that DC does, but there are plenty of parks that have some green and lots of concrete. USDH housing tends to have some green areas nearby and my dog has enjoyed walking around the boulevard by the Caspian. Haven't been to the vet yet but there is one that many Embassy families use. No quarantine or other extra steps required usually. - Jun 2023
There are a couple good vets that work with expats. We adopted some cats here and then found homes for them before our departure. I don't have any idea about quarantine. I think the recent US restrictions on dogs was because of an NGO here in Azerbaijan that sent dogs to the US with rabies. That literally just happened the other day so things might change quite a lot soon. You should know that most Azerbaijanis don't really like dogs so you don't see them that often. Cats are everywhere though. Cat watching has been a favorite activity for my children these last years. - Jun 2021

AZE does not require pet quarantine. Cat import was easy enough with the standard health certificate and vaccination paperwork; I think it's just as easy for dogs. Azeris love cats. They don't often keep cats in the house as pets, but neighborhoods take care of stray cats by leaving piles of food and bowls of water on the sidewalks. Azeris are not so keen on dogs; many are afraid of them. In general, it is not acceptable in Baku to walk on the grass, so there are very few green spaces to take a dog on a walk. There is a good vet called AARC (I believe it stands for AZE Animal Rescue Center) that many expats use. AARC is located on the northern outskirts of Baku. - May 2018
No quarantine, lots of stray dogs-major problem cycling and running...I recommend getting rabies vaccine if you plan on being outside. There is a decent vet here and dog grooming is available. - Mar 2017
