Colombo - School Report Question and Answers

What services are available for students with learning disabilities at this school? Please describe your experience with these services, if applicable.

Same as above. I think parents need to be realistic on what their kids might need. I know USG families have a lot of support, but parents need to be clear that they have to be responsible for this extra learning and support for their kids. - Oct 2024

Over the last few years, the school has developed a student services team that supports kids who have learning differences. One of my kids has received regular support from the team, who have helped them to understand and begin to address some post-pandemic learning and social challenges that we weren't aware of until coming to post. My kids teachers have also been supportive along what has been a challenging period for us. While I think the school is well intentioned and well-prepared to deal with most learning disabilities, Sri Lanka does not have strong options for OT, PT and other needs, and I've seen it be a lonely place to try to understand and address more severe learning disabilities. - Sep 2024

There is a learning support teacher for primary and one for secondary. I would say the support is very limited and meant for kids with very minor disabilities. My child received some support but not close to what they got in their home country. In October, the learning support teacher asked if I had heard of dysgraphia because he believed my child had it. I found this strange as dysgraphia is one of my child's confirmed disabilities and was supposed to be receiving services for it. I can only assume that this means my child was not receiving those services. - Jan 2024
